Garage Woodworking Layouts

Garage Woodworking Layouts

I don’t have a lot of space in my garage. Are there any good plans for the best way to layout the tools in my workshop?

You’ll want to start by taking good measurements of your garage. Then compile a list of the tools that you own (or hope to own) that take up floor space. This will include your workbench, planer, jointer, tablesaw, drill press, router table, etc

Take measurements of these items and draw them to scale on another piece of paper. Now cut these templates out, and you will have an easy way to figure out what may the be the best way to layout your tools for your garage.

Sometimes though it is nice to see examples of how other people have configured their workshops. Here are a few examples to help you get started.

Shown here is an example of a one-car garage. The dimensions being roughly 10 ft by 16 ft. Notice however that the garage door is not shown in the diagram, so for those that have a similar size garage take that into consideration.

This next layout is about double the size of the first, comparable to a two-car garage.

Hopefully these two illustrations will give you some help in your own garage workshop layout.

If drawing tools to scale is not your thing, then really the second best thing to do is to stand in your workshop/garage space and then visualize for a few minutes where everything is to go.

Take into consideration the flow or movement of the work pieces when setting up the tools so that for example the wood storage unit would be close to the door, and that then the planer and jointer would be closest to the storage bin. This way you will reduce the amount of movement you will have to do when working.

It’s very important to take the extra time to plan this step because as your space fill sup with tools, you will probably not move then again. Planning your garage workshop layout is very important, so take the time and do it properly.
